------ TIP ------ Test and ping now yourself all IP of this list !!!
(in progress)
What kind of IP services can i ping ?
My advices:
- Speedtest servers (which allow ICMP/ping requests) (do not ping the main
web server which is half of time a server farm which rounds robin to another "hard
to find" other speedtest server)
- Public DNS servers (which allow ICMP/ping requests) (do not ping the web
server which can be another IP ^^ only ping the direct IP addresses displayed by
this website !). In both cases, see the first Q&A on the FAQ below to know what *can* be a good fair use.
Good but...:
- Videos service like NETFLIX (do not ping the main web server... and raw
multimedia fluxes IP are hard to find and can regurarly changes).
Tolerated:
- Pinging his ISP (well known usage is to ping www.my-isp.com or the first hop of his
network infrastructure but you will not be able to detect a WAN trouble. see the first
Q&A on the FAQ below to know what *can* be a good fair use.
- Some rare sysadmins authorizes fair use pings. I do not publish this list because
i only know... one of that ;) see again the first Q&A on the FAQ below to know what *can*
be a good fair use.
Best way is to avoid (= they are open but ping requests can be not enough accepted):
- RSS fluxes (well known usage is to ping them one per minute not more !!!)
AVOID:
- First of all, every governments websites !!!
- Farm games servers like LoL or others Minecraft. You can be more considered as a disturber
and a lag creator than other thing...
- Commercial or non-profit servers/services (Amazon, Facebook, Ebay,
clothes/multimedia/cars seller, TV channels, charities, weather portals, redcross
organization, music player, newspapers and so on...). They have good enough
infrastructure for all the traffic and often opens (in fact accepts) ping access only
from time to time usages like a website check access via one ping NOT MORE !!!
- Newsgroups, mails, NTP, private DNS, private web servers... and so on...
As explained below,
1) Pick up DNS public servers IP:
Well known in 2020 are Google DNS (8.8.8.8) followed by QUAD9 (9.9.9.9) and CLOUFARE
(1.1.1.1 but see my warning for this service in the FAQ), the ancester 4.2.2.1 to 4.2.2.6
from LEVEL3, the mature OPENDNS, DNS ADVANTAGE/NEUSTAR, DNS.WATCH, GREENTEAMDNS, DYN,
YANDEX DNS, FREEDNS.ZONE and others COMODO services and so on...
2) You can look at SPEEDTESTSERVER.COM which
indicates some speedtest.net hosts to pinging them. Notice not all of them answers to
ping requests ;)
3) You can look at my speedtest page www.willemijns.com/fasqpeed.htm the servers
which uses legacy FDOSENNA / LIBRESPEED scripts (with only one location) test not the multi
test servers branchs) to pinging them.
4) Again ,you can look at my speedtest page www.willemijns.com/fasqpeed.htm the server list
which uses NDT / MEASUREMENTLAB.NET to pinging them.
5) You can look at again my speedtest page all the FTP and HTTP servers with direct
speedtest files (fair ping is tolerated on this case):
ping test-debit.free.fr
(French ISP HTTP French server
ping ping.online.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping ipv4.bouygues.testdebit.info
(French ISP HTTP French server managed by a volunteer)
ping scaleway.testdebit.info
(French ISP HTTP French server managed by a volunteer)
ping paris.cdn.mediactive-network.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping ipv4.rbx.proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping ipv4.sbg.proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping ipv4.bhs.proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP Canadian server)
ping proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping gra.proof.ovh.net
(French Webhoster HTTP French server)
ping ftp.atman.pl
(Polish Webhoster HTTP Polish server)
You read the first 12 pingables IP from this list, complete it with the about 220
others but not all of them are pingable...
6) Some others services to ping:
ping speedtest.molotov.tv
(French TV service)
ping checkmynet.lu
(Luxemburg official GOV speedtest)
FAQ:
====
- Q: Except my servers, can i legally ping a server ?
A: To simplify: it is more no than yes. Follow my advices above and skips
my avoided solutions...
FYI the US gov time agency service considers as a DDoS a looped "four
seconds or less" continuous access to their own services
(see https://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi). For me, i estimate five seconds
"by security". They are no law for this exact action but it can be considered as an indirect
computer server attack which is of course not legal whatever in the world !!!
Pssssssst.... hint ! do not ping the same server ;)
- Q: Can i ping Cloudfare 1.1.1.1 or 1.0.0.1 ?
A: Avoid this IP because some older hardware (before 2010) uses old Internet
specifications and can considers on some cases than you are fakely online all the time. Easy
way on your case is to unplug your Internet connexion and ping this IP adress but
--- for me --- by security i always forget that IP for ping tests, they are plenty others IP
all around the world...
(info+) See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1.1.1.1#Criticism_and_problems
(info++) Some Cisco routers used it, some ISP blocked them by default, "1.0.0.1"
can works well but "1.1.1.1" not (it is the trouble detected on
olders French ISP hardwares
selled or rented to their own customers to have Internet Accesss).
- Q: Can i remove my server(s) from this page ?
A: NP. Drop me a mail.
